Allianz: AI efforts

Allianz is, on current evidence, the AI leader among the world's large insurers — ranked first in the 2026 Evident AI Index for Insurance, ahead of AXA. Its programme pairs a company-wide generative-AI platform with agentic claims automation and a global partnership with Anthropic. Part of InsureBench's overview of AI in insurance; every figure is sourced.

Where Allianz ranks on AI

In June 2026, Allianz took the top spot in the Evident AI Index for Insurance for the first time, overtaking AXA.1 The Index benchmarks 30 leading global insurers across four pillars; Manulife, Zurich, and Liberty Mutual complete the top five.

Evident attributes the position partly to the largest AI talent pool in the sector — roughly 28% bigger than the next competitor — which lets Allianz scale use cases into production rather than leave them as pilots.2

Governance

Responsible AI

8 principles

A published Responsible Use of AI framework, a Group Data & AI Trust Advisory Board, and EU AI Pact signatory status (Nov 2024).7

"Insurance is an industry where the stakes of using AI are particularly high: the decisions can affect millions of people."

Dario Amodei, CEO & Co-Founder, Anthropic — Jan 20268

Automate the work, keep a human accountable

The recurring theme across Allianz's programme is that AI does the work but a human owns the decision. Project Nemo settles in minutes yet keeps a human on the final payout; the Anthropic partnership ships compliance systems that log AI decisions.

That boundary — fast, document-grounded automation under human oversight — is exactly what an insurance benchmark needs to measure.

Governance at a glance
  • 8 principles — transparency, non-discrimination, human oversight
  • Group Data & AI Trust Advisory Board plus AI Trust Officer roles
  • EU AI Pact signatory (Nov 2024); EU AI Act programme underway
  • Human-in-the-loop on claims payout decisions

Why this matters for benchmarking

Allianz's programme shows where AI is heading in insurance: not chatbots, but agents that read documents and act on real underwriting and claims work. That makes independent measurement essential — an insurance AI benchmark that scores models on the same verifiable tasks, under the human-in-the-loop constraints Allianz itself insists on.
