AI in insurance

Every large insurer now has an AI programme. This is an overview of how the world's biggest insurers actually use AI — the market numbers, the adoption gap, and a growing set of sourced per-company profiles, anchored on the Evident AI Index. It's the industry context for InsureBench.

The state of AI adoption in insurance

Insurance is one of the most AI-active industries — and one of the most cautious about putting it into production. Deloitte found 76% of insurers had deployed generative AI in at least one function by 2024,1 while BCG reports only about 7% have actually scaled it.2 The prize is large: McKinsey estimates AI could add up to ~$1.1 trillion in annual value to global insurance.3 The work is concentrated in the document-heavy core workflows — underwriting, claims, and actuarial.

How insurers are ranked: the Evident AI Index

The Evident AI Index for Insurance benchmarks 30 of the largest global insurers across four pillars — talent, innovation, leadership, and transparency. In the 2026 edition (June 16, 2026), Allianz took first place, overtaking AXA.4 We use that index as the backbone for the profiles below.

Why an independent benchmark matters

Adoption indices measure how much insurers invest in AI; they don't measure whether the models are actually right on the work. That's the gap InsureBench fills — scoring language models on real underwriting, claims, and actuarial tasks against verifiable outcomes.

See the methodology for how, and the core workflows for what that work involves.

From adoption to accuracy
  • Indices measure investment, talent, and intent
  • InsureBench measures whether the model gets the answer right
  • Verifiable outcomes, scored pass@1
  • Across underwriting, claims, and actuarial
