MassMutual: AI efforts
MassMutual is one of the most AI-mature US life insurers — top 10 in the Evident AI Index in both 2025 and 2026, and Evident's most active insurer AI investor. Its AI roots run to 2013, and a 2019 peer-reviewed paper showed its algorithmic "life score" beats traditional underwriting. Part of InsureBench's overview of AI in insurance; every figure is sourced.
Where MassMutual ranks on AI
MassMutual ranks #10 in the 2026 Evident AI Index for Insurance (down from #8 in 2025, but top 10 both years), with Innovation its strongest pillar (3rd).1 Evident also names it the most active AI venture investor it tracks, with MassMutual Ventures backing 13 AI companies.2
Its standout result is rigour: a peer-reviewed, MassMutual-authored 2019 paper showed its algorithmic "life score" outperforms traditional underwriting by 6% on claims.3

"We're going to be very, very thoughtful and diligent before we put anything directly in front of a policyholder, because the cost of an error right now is too high to just let these things loose."
Sears Merritt, CIO, MassMutual — Feb 20254Measured by design, human-in-the-loop
MassMutual is deliberately cautious: all generative AI is employee-facing only, under mandatory training and human oversight, with no model placed directly in front of a policyholder until the error cost is acceptable. The roadmap is to evolve today's assistants into governed autonomous agents.
That correctness bar — is the model right enough to trust? — is exactly what an insurance AI benchmark measures.
- Internal-only generative AI (no direct-to-policyholder)
- Human-in-the-loop with mandatory employee training
- Peer-reviewed, measured modelling (AAAI 2019)
- Most active insurer AI venture investor
Why this matters for benchmarking
MassMutual built one of insurance's earliest rigorous underwriting models and is extending into gen-AI carefully. Whether those models are right is exactly what InsureBench measures. See the methodology.
